Much of the landscape around the city was created by volcanic activity, meaning that there are several caves to explore. From public caverns to national lava bed monuments, you can learn first-hand how this Earth was formed.

It wouldn't be a trip to California without a little relaxation. Redding has ample sites for fishing and boating. It was even named one of North America's 'Top 10 Trout Fishing Towns' by Forbes Magazine. Boat ramps are available along the Sacramento River, providing easy access for professional and novice fishing enthusiasts alike.

However, don't think you have to come here in the summertime to experience the natural beauty of Redding. The town sits at the foothills of gorgeous mountains at the north end of the Sacramento Valley, meaning that snow-play attractions are always available during the winter months. Mt. Shasta, the second highest volcano in the United States, offers year-round outdoor activities like climbing, but it is world-renowned for its ski park. Consisting of 32 trails that comprise 425 acres of skiable terrain, Mt. Shasta Board and Ski Park is the perfect place to snowmobile, dog sled and cross-country ski. If cross-country skiing is your passion, consider a trip to Lassen Peak. This active volcano in the Cascade Volcanic Arc houses the Lassen Volcanic breathtaking mountain views, moderate hiking trails and guided snowshoe hikes. Off road vehicles are prohibited, ensuring the park remains in pristine condition for all to enjoy.

It wouldn't be a trip to Redding, California without visiting the iconic Sundial Bridge at Turtle Bay. Opened in 2004, this bridge spans the Sacramento River and links the campuses of the Turtle Bay Exploration Park. It also acts as a downtown entrance for the town's Sacramento River Trail system. The Turtle Bay Museum is at the heart of the Turtle Bay experience and consists of permanent and interactive exhibits. Visitors can view underwater fishing, experiments with scientific equipment and view the wonderful art on display.

The kids love the Turtle Bay Exploration Park for its children-oriented activities. Paul Bunyan's Forest Camp is an educational site modeled after a historic forest camp. Visitors can view animals and interact with hands-on exhibits. There is also outdoor playground equipment, water features and an amphitheater for animal shows. The educational animal shows vary from discussions about aquatic creatures to hawk flying demonstrations.

Don't leave Turtle Bay without stopping at the McConnell Arboretum&Botanical Gardens. The latest section to open in the Turtle Bay Exploration Park, the gardens feature twenty acres of Mediterranean-style gardens, a medicinal garden, a unique children's garden and beautiful water features. It directly links with the Sacramento River Trail, so the family can spend the entire day exploring nature. Turtle Bay also features a café that serves up delicious meals in one of the area's most beautiful settings. Enjoy listening to a jazz band as you eat your elegant dinner or warm up with an espresso on a chilly winter's day.
